Atalanta set a new club record with their 10th consecutive Serie A victory, defeating Cagliari 1-0 on Saturday to extend their lead at the top of the table. Nicolò Zaniolo scored the only goal of the match, helping Atalanta reach 37 points, five ahead of second-place Napoli, who still had to play later that day. Cagliari, who remain in 15th place with 14 points, put up a strong fight, particularly in the first half.
Despite Cagliari’s dominance early on, Atalanta’s goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi was in outstanding form, keeping the game scoreless with several crucial saves. Carnesecchi was particularly effective against Cagliari’s Roberto Piccoli, who was the most dangerous player on the field. Three times, Carnesecchi denied Piccoli, including a double save from a close-range shot and a rebound attempt.
In the second half, Atalanta made a series of tactical changes, including bringing on Zaniolo. The substitute made an immediate impact, scoring in the 66th minute just two minutes after entering the game. Zaniolo’s goal came after a cross from Lazar Samardzic was poorly cleared by Cagliari, allowing Raoul Bellanova to pass the ball to Zaniolo, who slotted home with a first-time shot.
Atalanta continued to push for a second goal, with Ademola Lookman coming close when his shot hit the inside of the post. Cagliari pressed hard for an equalizer in the final moments, but Carnesecchi was once again there to deny them, making a reflex save from Sebastiano Luperto in added time.
Although Atalanta had to work hard for the win, their solid performance and resilience further cemented their position as serious contenders for the Scudetto this season. The victory also showcased their strength in both attack and defense, with Carnesecchi playing a pivotal role in securing the three points.
