West Ham Considers Ex-Chelsea Boss as Stopgap Before Allegri’s Arrival

West Ham are reportedly preparing for managerial changes, with discussions involving former Juventus boss Max Allegri as a potential replacement for under-fire manager Julen Lopetegui. With Lopetegui under immense pressure, the Hammers have also lined up an interim solution in case Monday’s match against Wolves does not yield a favorable result.

Lopetegui, who replaced David Moyes during the summer, has faced criticism after losing seven of his 14 matches in charge. His tenure has been inconsistent, with a notable victory against Newcastle overshadowed by subsequent losses to Arsenal and Leicester. This crucial match against Wolves, dubbed “El Sackico,” has heightened scrutiny for both Lopetegui and Wolves manager Gary O’Neil, whose position is also precarious.

Reports suggest West Ham’s hierarchy has approached Allegri, but the seasoned Italian manager has expressed reluctance to join a Premier League club mid-season, preferring to take on a role next summer. As a result, the club is considering interim options, with Graham Potter reportedly open to stepping in on a short-term basis. Potter, previously linked to numerous roles since his departure from Chelsea in April 2023, is said to be “ready to return to the dugout for the right opportunity.” Although Potter’s tenure at Chelsea ended poorly, leaving them in 11th place, he remains a favored candidate for various managerial roles and is currently linked to the Tottenham job amid rumors of uncertainty surrounding Ange Postecoglou.

West Ham legend Tony Cottee has voiced criticism of Lopetegui’s appointment, stating it was a misstep after Moyes’ successful tenure. “I wasn’t in favor of the appointment,” Cottee told the BBC Sounds Sacked in the Morning podcast. He emphasized the challenge of following Moyes, who secured West Ham’s first trophy in 43 years despite not delivering consistently exciting football. Cottee reflected, “I think it was always going to be difficult to replace David. Really, really difficult.”

With the Wolves clash poised as a make-or-break moment for Lopetegui, West Ham’s leadership faces tough decisions. Whether they turn to Potter as a stopgap or wait for Allegri’s availability, the club must act decisively to stabilize their turbulent season.
