Manchester United is currently in talks to secure a long-term contract with rising star Kobbie Mainoo, amidst increasing speculation about his future with the club. The club faces a tricky situation due to its need to meet profit and sustainability regulations, which could make Mainoo’s departure a possibility. The young midfielder, who has been at the club since he was six years old, has become an integral part of manager Ruben Amorim’s plans. However, United is firm that only an offer of around $86 million (£70 million) would convince them to sell Mainoo, who still has a contract until 2027.

Discussions are ongoing for a new deal to significantly boost Mainoo’s salary, which is currently set at $25,000 (£20,000) a week. Reports suggest that his representatives are pushing for a significant pay rise, with Mainoo reportedly asking for a weekly wage of $250k (£200k), which would place him among the club’s highest earners. At present, Casemiro leads the wage list at United with $430k (£350k) per week, followed by Marcus Rashford at $400k (£325k), and Bruno Fernandes at $370k (£300k). Mainoo’s new deal would reflect his increasing importance in the team under Amorim, who sees him as a key player for the future.

The player has made 52 appearances for United, contributing five goals and one assist over the past year and a half. Despite the lack of progress on a new contract since the previous season ended, recent rumors about Mainoo’s contract situation have reignited amid Manchester United’s ongoing financial struggles. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the club’s owner, is attempting to rein in operational costs and has already made significant cuts, including laying off 250 staff members and reducing Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassadorial duties.

The club’s financial difficulties have led to the contemplation of player sales, with Ratcliffe emphasizing the need to curb operational expenses to invest in future footballing talent. Meanwhile, Chelsea is reportedly keeping a close eye on Mainoo’s contract negotiations, which could see the England international making a move if terms cannot be agreed with United.
