Alex Baena, the talented attacking midfielder from Villarreal, is reportedly considering his future amid interest from top Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Aston Villa. The 23-year-old, who has emerged as one of Europe’s most promising playmakers, caught the attention of both clubs during the UEFA Nations League clash between Spain and Denmark in November. Baena’s preference is clear, as he has stated that for him to leave Villarreal, the move must be to a “top ten team in the world,” which he considers to be the next step in his career.
Villarreal, where Baena has been flourishing since his academy days, remains close to his heart. Speaking to Onda Cero, Baena made it clear that he is focused on finishing the current season at Villarreal and is happy at the club. He explained, “I try not to look too much at what people say, although I do get [of the rumors sent to me]. What I’m focused on is finishing the season at Villarreal and staying here, because that’s where I’m happiest.” However, the young star admitted that if an offer from a top club arrives, he would consider it. “If one day that offer comes, we’ll sit down and talk and see what’s best for both of us,” he said, leaving the door open for a potential move.
Arsenal, in particular, could have the upper hand in securing Baena’s services. With a £50 million release clause in his contract, Arsenal are reportedly monitoring Baena’s progress, as they seek to add creative depth to their squad, particularly in light of Martin Ødegaard’s heavy workload. Meanwhile, Aston Villa, under Unai Emery, have also expressed interest, having made strides in the Premier League and Europe, though Baena may prefer a move to a club with more consistent top-tier pedigree. Both teams would face a significant investment to land the Spanish international, with Villa potentially making him their joint-most expensive signing, if they were to move forward with their interest.
