The Vancouver Whitecaps, a Major League Soccer (MLS) team, is officially up for sale, as announced by the club’s ownership group on Friday. The decision comes after years of investment and development, with the group stating it is “the right time for an owner with the platform, resources, and ambition to enhance the club’s ability to compete at the highest levels of MLS and steward the club in realizing its significant potential.”

To facilitate the sale and ensure a smooth transition, the ownership group has enlisted financial giant Goldman Sachs. This marks a pivotal moment for the Whitecaps, who have been under the stewardship of Greg Kerfoot since 2002. Initially part of the North American Soccer League, the Whitecaps transitioned to MLS in 2011, with additional co-owners Steve Luczo, Jeff Mallett, and former NBA star Steve Nash joining in 2008.

The Whitecaps had a mixed 2024 season, finishing the regular season with a 13-13-8 record. They advanced past the Portland Timbers in a wildcard game but were eliminated by LAFC in the first playoff round. Following the playoff exit, the team made significant changes, including parting ways with head coach Vanni Sartini.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber expressed gratitude for the Whitecaps’ ownership group, saying, “The Vancouver Whitecaps would not be where they are today without the vision and commitment of this exceptional ownership group.” He praised the team as a “terrific club in a world-class city” and assured support from MLS in identifying suitable new owners.

The sale represents a major opportunity for new investors to capitalize on the Whitecaps’ established presence in MLS and their potential for growth. While the team has experienced challenges in recent seasons, the Whitecaps remain a significant player in a vibrant soccer market. This transition could mark the beginning of a new chapter aimed at elevating the team’s competitiveness and success on and off the field.
