Amad Diallo’s rise to prominence under Manchester United’s new head coach, Ruben Amorim, highlights the potential impact of a managerial change at Old Trafford. Following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag in October, many players at United have benefitted from Amorim’s arrival. While the Portuguese coach has made a positive start, including home victories against Bodø/Glimt and Everton, it is Diallo’s transformation that stands out. Under ten Hag, Diallo had been underused, starting only two matches in his brief interim period under Ruud van Nistelrooy. However, under Amorim, he has been given more responsibility, starting both of the league games since his appointment and playing a significant role in United’s Europa League win.
Diallo, who was initially expected to play as one of the two supporting attackers in Amorim’s three-man backline system, has instead excelled as a right wing-back. His adaptability and effectiveness in this position have been remarkable, contributing three assists to the five league goals United have scored since Amorim’s arrival. Since November, Diallo has registered more assists (four) than prominent players such as Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, and Luis Díaz. His newfound role as right wing-back gives him the space to attack with the ball at his feet, a key component of Amorim’s attacking system, which often relies on wing-backs to provide width.
In United’s win over Everton, Diallo was one of the standout players, creating three key passes and completing four dribbles, the most of any player on the field. His contributions didn’t stop there, as he also made four tackles, the highest in the match. Amorim praised Diallo’s all-around performance, stating, “He was really good defending, and really good attacking, so he has to continue to play like that.”
Looking ahead, Diallo will play a crucial role as United faces Arsenal, where the space on the right side could allow him to exploit Arsenal’s defensive weaknesses. Amorim’s trust in Diallo suggests the Ivorian has become a key figure in his tactical setup at Manchester United.
