Robert Lewandowski, the Polish striker, is poised to join Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the only players to score 100 goals in the UEFA Champions League. He is expected to lead the line for Barcelona against French outfit Brest on Tuesday, November 26.
Lewandowski has had an illustrious career, having won the Champions League once and scoring 99 goals in 124 appearances for Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona. He is currently third on the all-time scoring charts, behind only Messi and Ronaldo. The 36-year-old has been in fine form this season, registering 20 goals and two assists in 18 games across all competitions.
Lewandowski has also spoken about his pride in his career, saying that he has been able to hold his own against the likes of Ronaldo and Messi. “I think I’ve been close to that elite level in some moments and even beat them in different games. I think we can say I was around! It means a lot if you get close to guys like this. It makes me very proud to see that in the era of Messi and Ronaldo, sometimes, Lewandowski also managed to break some records and make an impact,” he said.
Lewandowski has also made a name for himself with his international career, scoring 83 goals for Poland in 155 appearances. He is fourth on the all-time international goalscoring charts, behind Messi, Ronaldo, and India’s Sunil Chhetri.
Barcelona will be looking to bounce back from a 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo in LaLiga on Saturday, and they will be keen to get a win against an unbeaten Brest side. Lewandowski will likely continue his rich vein of form, having scored five goals in four Champions League games this season.
Lewandowski’s achievement of reaching 100 Champions League goals would be a remarkable milestone in his career, and would cement his place among the all-time greats of the competition.
